Procrastination

By Atta Kakar

Procrastination simply means to delay in work, plans or something that is kept in mind to do. Every year, a majority of people, students plan several goals to achieve in a particular period, but when it comes to do that in practical, it becomes harder to start working on it. They keep themselves busy in useless activities that are not primarily necessary, but just to avoid working on the plan that was made earlier.

A number of reasons are there why does a person become a victim of procrastination such as lack of energy, time management and a proper road map. At the beginning, it is easier to put down on a paper sheet your up to do task, but in practical it may not be that much easy.

Let us see an example of Nazir Sabir, a Pakistani mountaineer. He was born in Hunza. He has climbed Mount Everest and four of the five 8000 m peaks in Pakistan, including the world's second highest mountain K2 in 1981, Gasherbrum II 8035m, Broad Peak 8050m in 1982, and Gasherbrum I (Hidden Peak) 8068m in 1992.

Before starting his journey and standing on top of the Mount Everest, Nazir Sabir was standing down the mountain, it was his assiduity that took him on the top of the world’s highest mountain. There is no denying of the fact, climbing the Mount Everest, he had a proper planning, discussed it with the experts and made strategy for the journey. He could have been procrastinated and hesitated, but not because it was the dream that he had to achieve and he succeeded.

Bigger or smaller the task seems difficult at the beginning. For instance, A friend of  asked to guide him for study and reading books on several subjects. He was quite interested, so as per his zeal and zest, I guided him. After couple of weeks when I acquired about the plan, he was excusing and arguing that he had not started reading books. When I further asked about his daily activities, I shocked when learnt that he is still confused what to do and what not to do. What I realized after that he was a victim of procrastination and now it was required to treat him and get him out of the dilemma. And to be honest I myself was suffering from the situations and still it happens sometimes.

What the experts the experts suggest regarding the procrastination, are one should make strategy how to achieve the task rather then when to get it started.Secondly, one should divide the work into  pieces so that it would not be like a burden on his shoulder. By dividing the task, it will be easy to achieve the short pieces by working on it in a gradual process. Thirdly, Replace the habit with 'do it now' habit. Fourthly, be in an inspiring environment, fifthly do not seek to be perfect and lastly, reward yourself and appreciate your efforts.
